UK: Edinburgh

Location: Royal Mile, Edinburgh, UK

The case study consists of the surviving part of the 19th-century Gaswork complex, in the Canongate area, located within the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh World Heritage Site.

The complex is very distinctive. It is a rare example of Victorian-era industrial heritage in Edinburgh, a city that is mostly known for its Medieval and early modern non-industrial architecture.

Even though it not listed, the Gaswork complex is surrounded by the listed buildings of Canongate Tolbooth and Canongate Kirk.

Being the target of several partial demolitions and proposed redevelopments, it has been selected to study how sustainable urban transformations can be planned and implemented and the impact on heritage materials and values.
